VIA Cares volunteers helped sort and package food for seniors over the holidays. We’re getting ready to go again, as the need in our community continues. VIA Cares volunteers helped keep a partnership with the San Antonio Food Bank going strong on December 10, 2020, helping pack food bags. Four VIA team members from various departments joined volunteers from other local agencies and formed assembly lines to bag fruits and vegetables donated by local grocer H-E-B.
For the third time in 2020, a team of VIA Cares volunteers delivered warm meals to veterans at the American GI Forum – National Veterans Outreach Program. On Nov. 29, seven VIA team members – operators and transportation managers – partnered with the Neighborhood Faith Convening Group to transport nearly 200 meals from Acadiana Cafe to the facility west of downtown. VIA Cares volunteers previously delivered meals to the veterans on Memorial Day and the 4th of July.
A steady stream of cars pulled up to Camelot Elementary on Nov. 19, 2020 to receive a free turkey from the local Amalgamated Transit Union’s Black Caucus Chapter. The Chapter, whose members include VIA current and retired bus and van operators, raised the funds, purchased the turkeys and partnered with New Life Church for the giveaway. Northeast Independent School District Family Specialist Laura Salas helped identify approximately 35 families in need during the Covid-19 pandemic.
